Erasmus Training Course
Erasmus+ Training Course: Nature as a Youth Worker 🌿🌍
Location: Gudevitsa, Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria
Dates: October 21–31, 2024
Participants: 16 youth workers from 9 countries
In the breathtaking landscapes of Gudevitsa, a small village nestled in Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains, sixteen youth workers from nine European countries gathered for the Erasmus+ Training Course, “Nature as a Youth Worker.” This unique 10-day experience, held from October 21 to October 31, 2024, aimed to deepen the participants’ understanding of how nature can shape and inspire youth work, bringing transformative approaches back to their communities.

Inspired by Bill Plotkin’s Ecocentric Wheel
Central to our journey was Bill Plotkin’s Ecocentric Developmental Wheel, a framework that invites individuals to connect more deeply with their natural surroundings, fostering personal and community growth. Participants explored ecocentric practices such as:
- Nature-Based Reflection 🌿 — Encouraging young people to find answers by connecting with nature, deepening self-awareness and purpose.
- Vision Quests 🌄 — Offering an opportunity to step out of everyday life, immerse in nature, and engage in personal discovery.
- Council Circles 🌀 — Creating spaces for open, authentic dialogue grounded in the natural wisdom around us.
Each of these practices aims to support youth in developing a stronger sense of identity and belonging within the natural world, creating ripple effects of resilience, empathy, and empowerment in their lives.

A Journey Through Nature and Self-Discovery
The days in Gudevitsa were filled with activities designed to challenge, inspire, and connect. Highlights of the training included:
- Endless Mountain Hikes 🥾 — Exploring the raw beauty of the Rhodope Mountains.
- Rock Climbing 🧗 — Pushing personal limits and building resilience.
- Ziplining 🚠 — Experiencing the thrill of freedom and trust.
- Yoga and Capoeira 🧘🎶 — Connecting mind and body through movement.
- Temazkal Ceremonies 🔥 — Participating in a traditional sweat lodge ritual for purification and renewal.
Evenings were equally magical as participants gathered around a campfire under the stars ✨, sharing stories, playing guitars, and creating spontaneous jam sessions that fostered a sense of community and belonging. Improvised theater added joy and laughter, bringing out the creativity and unique gifts of each participant.

Learning Outcomes and Impact
Throughout this immersive journey, participants gained valuable skills and insights, ready to bring back to their work with young people. Here’s what they’re now equipped with:
- Tools for facilitating nature-based practices that foster self-discovery and resilience in young people.
- Methods to create safe, open spaces for dialogue and connection within youth groups.
- Techniques to inspire a deeper environmental consciousness and sense of stewardship among youth.
